If you’ve ever experienced a setback in your business that left you stuck, overthinking your next step, or unsure how to move forward, shifting your perspective is what helps you rebuild momentum.
In this post, I’m sharing a simple but powerful framework to help you reframe setbacks, extract the lessons and turn them into momentum so you can move forward with clarity and confidence. Let’s dive in.
The inevitability of setbacks
Whether it’s a client dropping out, a launch not quite going as planned, an event not selling out or a perfectly planned week falling apart because your son gets sent home from school sick, we all experience setbacks in our business at one time or another.
And when it happens, it’s easy to feel deflated and question your ability to succeed.
I’ve experienced many setbacks in my business over the years and whilst I’ve spent time wondering where I went wrong, I’ve also learned something important: A setback doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
Setbacks aren’t a stop sign, they’re information. A signal. A chance to pause, reflect, recalibrate and use what you’ve learned to move forward wiser.
What matters most is how you respond
Setbacks are inevitable, what matters is how you respond to them.
You can either let them deflate you, dent your confidence and question your ability, or you can take what they’ve taught you and turn the setback into momentum.
Here’s how to reframe your challenges as opportunities to learn so that you can navigate bumps in the road without losing confidence or drive.
Step 1: Reframe the setback
The first step is all about perspective. Because a setback isn’t a verdict, it’s data. And whilst it’s easy to take things personally, it’s probably not about you at all.
For instance, if you were hosting an event, and nobody signed up, it’s easy to think “Maybe it’s me, maybe they don’t like me… that’s why they didn’t sign up.”
But like I said, it’s highly unlikely that it’s about you. So, instead of asking, “Why did this happen to me?” ask yourself: “What is this showing me about my strategy, my timing, or my energy?”
Shift from self-judgment to curiosity and ask the question: “What can I learn from this?”
Because when you shift from self-judgment to curiosity, you stop spiralling, take your power back and turn the setback into something useful.
Write down a recent setback you experienced and list three lessons or insights it’s giving you.
What is it telling you about your strategy, your timing, your messaging, your energy? Write down whatever comes to mind. Even the smallest of observations count and will help turn frustration into fuel for your next step.

Step 2: Identify the adjustment
Setbacks often highlight what needs adjusting. They reveal a misalignment or a tweak that you can make to help you get a better result next time. Use the insights you gained from reviewing your setback to identify the adjustments you need to make.
- Was the goal too big for the time and energy you had available?
- Do you need more clarity on your strategy?
- Was your timing off or your messaging unclear?
- Was your support system missing or lacking accountability?
- What would make this easier or more sustainable next time?
Choose one small adjustment based on your insights.
It could be shifting a deadline, simplifying a task, sharing about your offer more, or asking for help. What will make moving forward more aligned and realistic?
Step 3: Take a micro-action
Momentum comes from taking action – and continuing to take it even when the road is bumpy. Once you’ve dusted yourself off, reframed the setback and identified an adjustment you can make, take action.
Because that one micro-action will restore your confidence and prevent the setback from stalling your progress.
Send the follow-up email you postponed. Draft the first paragraph of a blog post or newsletter. Have a brainstorm session about how you can tweak your strategy.
Pick one micro-action you can complete today, no matter how small and imperfect it feels and use it to help you start gaining momentum.
Step 4: Anchor your confidence
Even when you know it’s not about you, setbacks can shake your belief in yourself. Taking steps to rebuild confidence is key.
One of the best ways to do this is to keep a wins journal.
Something that I do and recommend my clients do too, every time you accomplish something, big or small, write it in your journal. Then, any time you need to remind yourself what you’re capable of, read through your journal. This will help you anchor your belief in yourself using real evidence instead of feelings in the moment.
What have you achieved this month?
Whether it’s personal or business, take a moment to acknowledge your growth and celebrate your wins no matter how small they might be. Confidence grows when you notice the progress you’re already making instead of focusing on what you haven’t yet accomplished.

Step 5: Use support to build momentum
Even the most resilient business owners move faster and with more clarity when they have the right support around them. Who in your circle can you lean on for support? It could be a coach, a mentor, a fellow business owner, an accountability partner or a friend. When you have support in place:
- You’re able to share challenges with someone who can guide you without judgement.
- You have someone to help you map your adjustments into clear next steps.
- You have accountability to follow through on the micro-actions you identified.
This is exactly what we do inside my 1-1 accountability program, Biz-Mentum. Whenever setbacks arise, we turn them into stepping stones so that you can avoid those self-doubt spirals, bounce back faster and keep the momentum going.
Who can help you move forward and support you in turning your setback into momentum?
Setbacks in action - a mini-example
Imagine your launch week hits a snag… that there’s a tech glitch that means your webinar or workshop doesn’t go live. Here’s what turning setbacks into momentum looks like in action:
- Step 1: Reframe the setback. This isn’t a disaster; it’s a tech issue and a reminder to strengthen your prep and backup plans.
- Step 2: Identify the adjustment. Switch to a simpler, pre-recorded version so your audience can still access the content without delay.
- Step 3: Take micro-action. Send an email letting your audience know what’s happened and share the new pre-recorded version so they can watch it at a time that suits them.
- Step 4: Anchor your confidence. Recall all the successful launches you’ve already led - and the times you’ve navigated challenges like this before and still created results.
- Step 5: Use support to build momentum. Reach out to your accountability partner or coach to sense-check your next steps and refine your plan moving forward.
What started out feeling like a disaster becomes something you’ve navigated, learned from, and moved through with confidence – all without losing momentum.
Turning setbacks into momentum
Setbacks are never fun in the moment, but they’re also not the end point we often make them mean.
When you start seeing setbacks as feedback instead of failure, everything changes. You stop stalling, you stop spiralling and you start moving again – with more awareness, clarity and intention than before.
Momentum isn’t about everything going smoothly all of the time. It’s about how quickly you can recalibrate when it doesn’t.
The more you practise this process, the more resilient, confident and steady your business becomes. Not because setbacks stop happening, but because you know exactly how to move through them when they do.
Don't navigate setbacks alone
If setbacks in your business are leaving you feeling stuck or second-guessing your next move, my 1-1 program, Biz-Mentum, gives you the support and accountability to turn challenges into clear next steps so that you can move forward with confidence.
